Quick Idea #1 - Reading Goals

Reading Goals

Grade Level:  2 - 3

Information & 21st Century Skill Objectives:

ISTE Standard 1.a: Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them, and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.

Materials:

- a copy of Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller (or another picture book with the theme of setting goals)

- Goal-setting sheets

- pencils

- iPad (or interactive board)

Instructional Procedures:

  • Discuss with students the idea of setting goals and why people might do so.

  • Read Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller.

  • Continue discussing with students about goals they may have made in the past and what they had to do to achieve them.

  • Discuss the importance of reading and how reading has many benefits.

  • Have students decide on a reading goal for each month. This may be in the form of reading so many books per week or month. Have students write their goal(s) on their goal-setting form.

  • Using the iPad or interactive board, show students how they can access the OPAC to find books that they may be interested in. Remind students that they can also access the library collection from home with a device to find materials they would like to read.

  • Students will turn in their goal-setting sheets.

  • Ongoing - The librarian will select a few goal-setting sheets to conference with students to see how reaching their reading goal is going. Goal-setting sheets can also be given to Reading teachers to aid in conferencing with students.

Suggested Instructional Strategies:

-Conferencing

-Reinforcing effort and providing recognition

Assessment:

  • At the end of each month (and semester if possible), students will assess how they did in reaching their goals. A short assessment form can be used for student feedback. This will allow students to share their successes and areas of need.
