Dewey Decimal Scavenger Hunt

Grade Level: 3-5


Texas School Library Standards: 

1.1.0 Learners and educators use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose; they also access and evaluate print and digital resources for their inquiry needs, academic needs, and/or personal needs.


Materials: 

-a copy of Do You Know Dewey?: Exploring the Dewey Decimal System by Brian P. Cleary

-Scavenger hunt cards or paper copies of questions

-pencils


Instructional Procedures: 

  • Introduce and read Do You Know Dewey? Exploring the Dewey Decimal System by Brian P. Cleary. 

  • After the read-aloud, follow up with a discussion about how the Dewey Decimal system is a vital way to organize books in the library. 

  • Explain to the students that they will get to practice and show off their knowledge about the Dewey Decimal system by completing a scavenger hunt. 

  • Supply students with the materials listed above to complete the scavenger hunt. 

  • After students have completed the scavenger hunt, come back together and answer any questions they may have. 

  • Ask students to share any Aha! moments during today’s lesson.

Assessment:

  • Assessment of the ability to correctly use and access information using the Dewey Decimal system will come from students' completed scavenger hunt sheets.
