Dewey Decimal Scavenger Hunt
Grade Level: 3-5
Texas School Library Standards:
1.1.0 Learners and educators use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose; they also access and evaluate print and digital resources for their inquiry needs, academic needs, and/or personal needs.
Materials:
-a copy of Do You Know Dewey?: Exploring the Dewey Decimal System by Brian P. Cleary
-Scavenger hunt cards or paper copies of questions
-pencils
Instructional Procedures:
Introduce and read Do You Know Dewey? Exploring the Dewey Decimal System by Brian P. Cleary.
After the read-aloud, follow up with a discussion about how the Dewey Decimal system is a vital way to organize books in the library.
Explain to the students that they will get to practice and show off their knowledge about the Dewey Decimal system by completing a scavenger hunt.
Supply students with the materials listed above to complete the scavenger hunt.
After students have completed the scavenger hunt, come back together and answer any questions they may have.
Ask students to share any Aha! moments during today’s lesson.
